Margaret Lawrence (1914–2004) was a passionate collector who amassed an extensive and diverse private collection of Australian studio ceramics. In Lawrence’s idiosyncratic collection, works by Australian pioneers such as William Merric Boyd and Klytie Pate sit alongside works by lesser known potters as well as distinguished contemporary artists, such as David Ray and Deborah Halpern. This panel will survey different lineages of Australian ceramics through the prism of Lawrence’s collection, with insights from gallerists and curators who knew Lawrence and her collection well. The panel also invites consideration of contemporary Australian ceramic practice by artists who approach ceramics in a highly distinctive manner.
Panelists include: Anna Maas, Director, Skepsi on Swanston Gallery; Tina Lee, curator of Terra Firma: The Inquisitive Collector, an exhibition of Margaret Lawrence’s collection at Chapter House; David Ray, contemporary ceramicist in Margaret Lawrence’s collection; Jane Sawyer, ceramicist and founding Director of the Slow Clay Centre, and Sanné Mestrom, contemporary artist exhibiting inAssembly at the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery.
